Usage Rate

USG% Share of their team's possessions a player finishes while on the floor.

Formula

100 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA + TOV) × (team minutes ÷ 5) ÷ (player minutes × (team FGA + 0.44 × team FTA + team TOV))

What it means

A possession ends when someone shoots, gets fouled, or turns the ball over. Usage rate asks how often that someone was this player, adjusted for time on the court.

Around 20% is average by definition — five players share every possession. Above 30% means a primary option; the highest figures in basketball sit near 40%.

What to watch out for

This is the box-score approximation. A true usage figure needs play-by-play to know exactly who was on the floor for each possession; ours assumes team totals scale evenly with minutes played.
