Performance Index Rating

PIR European basketball's single-number summary of a performance. · EuroLeague, EuroCup only

Formula

(PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK + fouls drawn) − (missed FG + missed FT + turnovers + shots blocked against + fouls committed)

What it means

PIR is the official efficiency figure of EuroLeague and most European competitions. It adds up everything good a player did in a game and subtracts everything wasteful, giving one number that ranks performances without weighting anything.

Its virtue is that it is transparent and impossible to argue with arithmetically. Its weakness is the flat weighting: a rebound counts the same as a point, so it favours big men who accumulate rebounds and punishes high-volume shooters who miss.

What to watch out for

PIR is null for every NBA and WNBA row on this site. An ESPN box score carries no 'fouls drawn' or 'shots blocked against', and those two terms are part of the formula. Rather than compute a different number and call it PIR, we leave the column empty.
