True Shooting Percentage

TS% Scoring efficiency counting twos, threes and free throws together.

Formula

PTS ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA))

What it means

Field goal percentage treats a three-pointer and a layup as the same event, and ignores free throws entirely. True shooting fixes both: it measures points produced per scoring attempt, where a scoring attempt is a field goal or a trip to the line.

The 0.44 is an estimate of how many free throw attempts end a possession — most trips are two shots, but and-ones and three-shot fouls pull the average away from 0.5.

It is 0.75 in the G League, which shoots a single free throw for the whole trip — worth one, two or three points — until the last two minutes. One attempt there costs most of a possession rather than half of one, and using the shared constant would read every G League scorer as more efficient than they were.

What to watch out for

Computed from season totals, not by averaging game percentages. The two differ, and the totals version is the standard.
